Using and Maintaining HVAC Systems in Rental Properties

4 Main Types Of Residential Air Conditioning Systems

Air conditioners are among the most common electrical appliances in American homes. When the time comes to install a new residential air conditioning system or replace your existing one, you'll find that there are different types of air conditioners, each with distinct quality and features. Choosing the right system will be crucial for your comfort and keeping energy consumption under control. Keep reading to learn the four main types of air conditioning systems.

Window Air Conditioners

As the name implies, these air conditioning units are mounted at the windows. All the components are within a single unit, making the installation process relatively easy. Once installed, the device emits hot air from inside to the outside while blowing cold air into the inside through its reasonably sized vents.

Generally, window air conditioners are suitable for cooling single rooms. But they can also be used to cool several connected rooms, as long as there are no doors to inhibit air circulation. Most homeowners like them because they are cheap to purchase and simple to operate.

Portable Air Conditioners

Portable air conditioners are almost similar to window AC systems. They are placed as single units, with all the components enclosed inside. The main difference is that portable systems can be moved around or from one room to another.

These air conditioners are ideal if you want to temporarily cool a space and it's impractical to install a window air conditioner. They may not work well if you want to cool a large home.

Central Air Conditioning

Central air conditioning is also referred to as a ducted system. It's the most efficient and most preferable for cooling large homes or multiple rooms at once. It's also the default choice for commercial properties.

Ducted systems supply cool air through ducts installed in your walls or floors. Once the air gets warm, it's circulated back into the ducts before being transported back into the central air conditioner. Proper sizing is needed for your central air conditioner to operate efficiently, so hire professional residential AC services to ensure everything is done to perfection.

Ductless Mini-Split Air Conditioners

If you want to eliminate lots of ducting or cool just a section of your home, a ductless system may be your go-to option. These systems don't use ducts to circulate cold air throughout your home but have refrigeration lines running from the compressor in the outdoor unit to the air blowers in the indoor units.

Also, multiple rooms can be cooled from one system. That's because one outdoor unit can be connected to several air blowers in different rooms. And since each zone has its specific thermostat, you can adjust temperatures for each of the rooms accordingly.
